Secure storage means locking guns in a secure place, such as a gun safe, or using safety devices such as trigger or cable locks.
The most secure way to store firearms, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, is to store them unloaded, locked, and separate from ammunition.
Why is secure storage important?
Secure storage of firearms has been shown to reduce suicides, stolen weapons, accidental shootings and school shootings.
According to a 2018 survey, there are 20 million firearms in California. Twenty-five percent of California households have firearms.
An estimated 54% of gun owners don’t lock all of their guns securely. Unsecured weapons in homes and vehicles are fueling an epidemic of gun thefts.
In 2020, COVID brought a 64% surge in gun sales.
