Suicide Prevention

Ninety percent of suicides with a gun are lethal, whereas only 4% of suicide attempts by other means result in death. Suicide among youth happened in the decedent’s home 65% of the time, with 57% of the firearms owned by a family member.

Santa Clara County from 2016-2020

Firearms were the number one suicide death for every age group, 15-24 and up.

From 2016 to 2020, in Santa Clara County, 391 people suffered firearm deaths: 60% were self-inflicted and 33% were homicides.

49% of gun deaths were people ages 18-44

27% were people ages 45-64

25% were people ages 65+

The suicide death rate of males is 3 to 4 times that of females.

During 2020, in Santa Clara County, eighty-eight people suffered firearm deaths: 63% were self-inflicted and 35% were homicides.
